PPE Question

Postby floormarkings » Thu Nov 12, 2009 5:16 am

I am currently working to upgrade our PPE policy where I work -but there is a level of -shall we say -'resistance' to the funding of the clothing required - as previously it was seen that it was up to the employees to make themselves comfortable.

Can anyone direct me to some literature that supports my position: that it should be the responsibility of the employer to make their employees comfortable at work - and that the said employees should not be taxed or levied for this....

It would be a great help.

i think the key words here are "cumfort " and "Proctective" as in PPE perhaps you should design a need for staff to be protected rather than cumfortable , then theres plenty of legislation to choose from to support your position

Thanks David - I think this is the silver bullet I was looking for (at least in the short term). This is simple and concise - I don't even have to make an argument (as such) - I can just say Hey - It's legislated already, quit wasting time. Thanks again.

Not only do we want to see our fellow employees comfortable while working, but also protected as they should be.

Now is a good time too to get your employees involved in the PPE selection process. If they are involved, you will see much more "buy in" which means less "convincing" from you to get them to wear it. At least it worked that way for me ;)

One more argument you can use is that if it's not comfortable, the guys don't like to wear it, whatever it is. If it is bothersome they are more likely to "forget" to put it on.

Let us not forget that if the company requires it because everything else doesn't work, it's up to the company to identify which to have the employees wear ... Also, by employee involvement, they have a say in the styles, colors, sizes, etc. Once the employees are on board with the PPE, they may have more ideas as to which vendors to purchase from. Also, the more options that the employees have in the say of PPE, the more opt in they will be to more PPE if needed, rather than not.
IMO, from years of having employees grovel over not wearing it, last resort is to use videos to show end results if not using PPE as required.
