How do you know if a door is a Fire Door?

Postby quailway1 » Mon Nov 16, 2009 9:53 pm

I have been asked by someone at one of our depots if their office door is a fire door and I don't know. It has safety glass in it but the actual door has been painted over and it looks to be quite old. I can't find any of the indicators I would normally look for on a newer door. Someone has put a 'fire door, keep closed' sign on it but, as we all know, that doesn't make it a fire door.

So, how do you know if a door with no visible indicators is a fire door, or just a normal door with a sign stuck on it?

If it is an old door there is no manufacturer's documentation or marking, then all you can really do is base your decision on the visible constuction. The thickness and presence of fire and smoke seals are easy to check and you should be able to feel the weight of the door to gauge if it's solid core or not. It can be easily seen if vision panels are GWPP, fire resisting clear glass should carry a marking.

A fire service contractor should be able to come out and evaluate your door too.
